Bittersweet Sweethearts w/Amy K Bormet

Amy K Bormet, pianist/vocalist and director of the Washington Women in Jazz Festival debuts a suite of music honoring the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, a multi-ethnic women’s big band from the 1930’s and 40’s that lived in Arlington, VA. Using interviews and found text from 1940’s jazz magazines, and projected archival photos, Bormet reflects on the trials and triumphs of these remarkable women, and the echoes of their impact today.

Bormet’s free live performance will include a vocal ensemble, a jazz ensemble with bass and drums and strings. 

Watch the work in progress during open rehearsals October 1 and 2 8pm-9pm

Amy K Bormet is a 2025 Arlington Artist-in-Residence.

The Peabody Conservatory’s select soprano-alto vocal ensemble, comprised of graduate and undergraduate musicians, is joined by cello quartet for James Kallembach’s moving Antigone, inspired by the writings of Sophie Scholl, and works by Julius Eastman, Jakob Handl, and Arnold Schönberg. Director of Choral Studies Beth Willer conducts.

Ensemble Evolution is the International Contemporary Ensemble’s summer intensive designed to foster a holistic understanding of the artist as a global citizen in collaboration with The New School’s College of Performing Arts in New York City. Ensemble Evolution participants engage in music-making, community-building, and creative producing through workshops, conversations, and radical artistic collaborations with faculty and other participants.

I’m so excited to workshop new commissions in the works for my 23-24 season during this intensive and meet new friends along the way!

Hole in the Floor Cello Quartet heads to NYC to perform at Concept Lab!

Concept Lab is an exploratory music series featuring works in progress, improvised works and collaborative and multi-disciplinary projects in all stages of completion.

Created by composers Seth Boustead and Will Rowe and run as a collective, Concept Lab is a showcase of the newest of the new. and an exciting chance to watch the creative process at work in real time.

Volume X features Detroit-based cello quartet Hole in the Floor. They'll showcase the work of three Detroit composers and then workshop three new Concept Lab pieces.

Hear works inspired by the search for extraterrestrial activity, the poetry of ee cummings and the Turing test (a test of machines’ ability to exhibit intelligent behavior, or indistinguishable from, that of a human.)
